Acquiring new visitors is essential, but retaining them is even more important. Because it is made by relevant visitors, direct traffic is an essential sign of the health of the site. The number of direct visits, their proportion in total visits, as well as the behavior of those who went directly to the site (in Google Analytics is between predefined segments, so a few clicks away) are important indicators in analyzing a website traffic quality. Web analytics tools themselves segment traffic by source and distinctly mark direct traffic.
There are a host of metrics to look at when you have a robust analytics solution, but having too many goals to live up to tends to result in prioritization difficulties. I recommend content marketing teams have 2-3 metrics they measure, and perhaps some secondary metrics each sub-team can measure to help understand when there are different levers to pull. Here are my recommendations:

I started reading it after I wrote this post and it confirmed and expanded what I already knew about content marketing, with much more detail than I could ever go into here. Something Pulizzi emphasizes which I originally left out was the importance of focusing on producing mobile-friendly content, since smartphones are becoming the dominant way in which most of our customers access content. It won't take you long to become not just familiar with content marketing, but an expert.

Improving the time spent on the site, after a user has reached a page in your site or online store, increasing the number of pages viewed in a session and lowering the bounce rate, can be a clear sign that it provides a pleasant experience for those who visit your site. After this you need to improve conversion, what the users do on your site after they get there, basically from here, the entire ordering process begins. 
Businesses in different neighborhoods will apply local marketing tactics to different consumer segments, as identified by socio-economic standing, demographic composition, and purchasing values—but assuming that a business’ location was planned as opposed to random, the consumers who live in the neighborhood are already the types of consumers who are interested in that business.
Staying updated on social media trends is great, but social is just the tip of the distribution iceberg. Email marketing helps; still, brands need to dig deeper to discover the distribution channels unique to their audiences. Could you include physical copies of content with certain products? Maybe sales and marketing can work together to target specific accounts and get relevant materials directly into their hands? Or maybe a speaking engagement is the best way to share your message with your audience?
